Your current event for the semester is due by Saturday, June 17th. I will create a discussion board for current events. No student will be allowed to present the same current event article. To reserve your article, you can post a link to your article to the current event discussion board (the first to post the link reserves the article). Different articles on the same issue are allowed. You must review the other posts to avoid duplication. This should provide an incentive to complete this assignment early.

You will need to prepare a short write-up about your article and post on the current event discussion board (approx. 1/2 page). Your write-up should briefly summarize the current event and make a direct tie to accounting via topics discussed in class. Make sure to make a specific connection to our course (preferably citing a chapter or page in the text). I recommend you post the link to the article to reserve it for your use before writing the summary. Once you write the summary, you can edit your original post and add the summary to it.

You work in a major metropolitan city jail as a corrections officer (CO). Your unit just received a new commander who came in from the headquarters administrative prison bureau, and this is his first assignment commanding actual COs in the field working in the cell block. Right away, you note that he is abrupt and demanding.

During a health and welfare sweep for contraband in a wing of the cell block, an ethnic male who is rumored to have been supplying inmates with controlled substances is found to have a small amount of marijuana concealed in his bunk. The new supervisor is trying to show how tough he is and is directing the CO team to only pick up all of the males that match the approximate age and ethnicity of this inmate and shake them down. All attempts by the members of the CO unit to get the supervisor to reconsider are met with an extreme violent reaction in which he starts screaming and relating that he knows this is a disloyal group and that he will see to it that the team is punished for disobeying an order. Then he starts yelling about not being able to commit to a campaign without good troops. The team became concerned about the new commander. They got together and came to you, as the senior member, asking what to do.

Please respond to the following questions. You must provide meaningful feedback to the main postings of at least two of your classmates:

  • What is the likely mental state of the new commander?
  • How could orders from this new commander to the unit cause issues with the corrections officers and their relationship in the inmate population?
  • Do you feel that this commander should be allowed to resume this position as your commander after he sees a trained mental health professional?

Assignment: Conducting a Literature Review on a Theoretical/Conceptual Framework

Problem Statement

Retaining top talent is a primary concern for many institutions (Hausknecht, Rodda&Howard, 2009).51% of employees believe that job satisfaction is necessary for employee retention ((Hausknecht, Rodda&Howard, 2009).The general business problem is that little is known about what compels employees to stay. The specific business problem is that relatively less research has focused specifically on how an employee decides to remain within an organization band what determines this attachment.

A literature review is a written approach to examining published information on a particular topic. In addition to reviewing literature on the problem or phenomenon, researchers must also conduct an exhaustive literature review on the selected theory or conceptual framework. You will conduct a review of literature to create a foundation and justification for your research and demonstrate knowledge on the selected theory or conceptual framework.

To prepare for this Assignment, review this week’s Learning Resources, and conduct a literature search in the Walden Library for articles where the author(s) grounded their study within the “same” theoretical/conceptual framework you propose for your Doctoral Study. Focus only on full-text, scholarly or peer-reviewed articles or doctoral studies/dissertations so that you have six (three quantitative and three qualitative) viable scholarly sources. Be sure to review Section 1.14 of the Doctoral Study Rubric and Research Handbook, provided in this week’s Required Readings, for further details of literature reviews and their requirements.

By Day 7

Submit a 4- to 5-page literature review in which you critically analyze and synthesize these six articles (three quantitative, three qualitative) related to your theoretical/conceptual framework. For each article, complete the following:

  • Critical Analysis
    • Identify the theoretical/conceptual framework of the study.
    • Describe the major finding(s).
    • Describe the strengths and weaknesses of the study.
  • Synthesis
    • Describe the placement of the research within theoretical/conceptual framework.
    • Explain the relationship of study to existing literature.

Note: This is not an “annotated bibliography” assignment. Ensure the literature review is an “interwoven conversation” written using the MEAL plan, consisting of critical analysis and synthesis. Do not present article by article. Be sure to review the required reading, particularly those focused on the literature review!

Basics of Literature Reviews

A literature review is a written approach to examining published information on a particular topic or field. An author uses this review of literature to create a foundation and justification for his or her research or to demonstrate knowledge on the current state of a field. This review can take the form of a course assignment or a section of a longer capstone project. Read on for more information about writing a strong literature review!

Students often misinterpret the term literature review to mean a collection of source summaries, similar to annotations or article abstracts. While summarizing is an element of a literature review, you will want to approach this assignment as a comprehensive representation of your understanding of a topic or field, such as what has already been done or what has been found. Then, also using these sources, you can demonstrate the need for future research, specifically, your future research.

There is usually no required format or template for a literature review. However, there are some actions to keep in mind when constructing your review:

  1. Include an introduction and conclusion. Even if the literature review will be part of a longer document, these paragraphs can act as bookends to your material. Provide background information for your reader, such as including references to the pioneers in the field in the beginning and offering closure in the end by discussing the implications of future research to the field.
  2. Avoid direct quotations. Just like in an annotated bibliography, you will want to paraphrase all of the material you present in a literature review. This assignment is a chance for you to demonstrate your knowledge on a topic, and putting ideas into your own words will ensure that you are interpreting the found material for your reader. Paraphrasing will also ensure your review of literature is in your authorial voice.
  3. Organize by topic or theme rather than by author. When compiling multiple sources, our tendency as writers can be to summarize each source and then compare and contrast the sources at the end. Instead, organize your sources by your identified themes and patterns. This organization helps demonstrate your synthesis of the material and inhibits you from creating a series of book reports.
  4. Use headings. APA encourages the use of headings within longer pieces of text to display a shift in topic and create a visual break for the reader. Headings in a literature review can also help you as the writer organize your material by theme and note any layers, or subtopics, within the field.
  5. Use comparative terms. A literature review can be lengthy and dense, so you will want to make your text appealing to your reader. Transitions and comparison terms will allow you to demonstrate where authors agree or disagree on a topic and highlight your interpretation of the literature.

1.14 – Review of the Professional and Academic Literature

The literature review content needs to be a comprehensive and critical analysis and synthesis of the literature related to the theory and/or conceptual model from the Theoretical/Conceptual Framework as well as the existing body of knowledge regarding the research topic. What a literature review should not be is an amalgamation of essays on the topic. The approach to this heading may vary by authors’ specific purpose. For example, if your study is to be grounded in the transformational leadership theoretical or conceptual framework, you will be examining or exploring your phenomenon through a leadership lens. You want to report on extant research that was grounded in the transformational leadership theoretical/conceptual framework. You would want to report on the literature that is as close to your topic/phenomenon as possible. In addition, if you are conducting a quantitative study, you need to include the literature for any other key variables. A basic outline is presented at Appendix A.[1]

Critical analysis and synthesis of the relevant literature will be an important element of the literature review. The review of the literature is not to be a regurgitation of what you have read. It is also not to teach about a topic; rather, it is to show your mastery of the previous and recent research on your topic and provide a comprehensive up-to-date literature review on your topic. Start with an introductory heading and then report the literature. This should be an exhaustive review of the literature using the chosen theoretical/conceptual framework and consist of the key and recent writings in the field. Repeat this approach if there are any additional theories. In addition, in quantitative studies, there must be a critical analysis and synthesis for each variable.

There are three questions that students typically ask about the literature review: (a) length, (b) organizational structure, and (c) content. The length will depend upon the theoretical foundation related to the topic and scholarly studies related to the theory. Typically, for a doctoral study, a literature review will average 35-40 pages. However, demonstrating a rich and comprehensive review of the topic is more important than the number of pages in a literature review.

The most common ways that one may organize the literature review are to use a chronological, topical, or combination of chronological and topical structure. The literature review should be a succinct yet in-depth critical analysis of scholarly studies and authoritative seminal work. The literature review should not be a summary of one’s reading or an amalgamation of essays on the topic.

The literature review content needs to be a comprehensive and critical analysis and synthesis of the literature related to the theory and/or conceptual model that one identified in the Theoretical/Conceptual Framework as well as the existing body of knowledge regarding the research topic. Typically one half to two thirds of a good literature review will relate the theory or conceptual models to a critical analysis and synthesis about the topic and problem. One organizational strategy for the literature review is (a) one third discussing the theory or conceptual model (see figure below), (b) one third topical foundation, and (c) one third discussing the topic in relation to the theory.

Assignment 2: Current Events and U.S. Diplomacy
Due Week 9 and worth 175 points

This paper will be a revised and expanded version of the first research paper. Based on your instructor’s feedback, you will first revise the first paper.

Write three-to-four (3-4) new pages that address the following:

  1. Define presidential doctrine and summarize the regional or global events during the Cold War leading up to the formation of the presidential doctrine you wrote about in Assignment 1.
  2. Select one country you wrote about in Assignment 1 and describe the Cold War relationship that existed between the country you selected and the U.S. before the presidential doctrine was announced.
  3. Describe the relationship that currently exists between the U.S. and the country you selected in section (2) above.
  4. Describe the effect that the presidential doctrine has had on regional or global affairs since it was announced during the Cold War.
  5. Assess whether or not the presidential doctrine you wrote about in Assignment 1 doctrine had had the intended effect of altering the behavior of the country you selected in section (2) above since the doctrine was first announced.
  6. Use at least four (4) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

To help you understand this assignment further, the following description and examples may be useful.

Step 1: Define doctrine and identify why a president would want to announce one.
A doctrine is an ideological platform that a president uses to advance a policy towards a country or region in order to accomplish foreign policy goals for the United States, so you will need to expand on this theme.

Refer back to Assignment 1, and build on whatever doctrine you wrote about then.  Say, for example, you selected the Truman Doctrine.  Therefore, this is the only thing you will write about in Assignment 2 step 1.

Step 2: Select one country you wrote about in Assignment 1 and describe the Cold War relationship that existed between it and the U.S.
Before the presidential doctrine was announced.  In the case of Truman, you would pick either the Soviet Union, Greece, or Iran, since all three were affected by his doctrine.  If you are writing about the Eisenhower Doctrine, you would choose Lebanon or Egypt; if you wrote about the Kennedy Doctrine, you would have write about Cuba or Vietnam; if your wrote about the Nixon Doctrine, you would choose either Vietnam, Saudi Arabia or Iran; if you chose Carter, you would select either Iran or Afghanistan; and if you wrote about the Reagan Doctrine, you would select Nicaragua, Angola, Russia or Afghanistan (although there were several others).

Step 3: Describe what effect the presidential doctrine you chose has had on regional or global affairs since it was announced during the Cold War.
That is, how did the doctrine change the status quo regionally or globally after it was announced by the U.S.?  What happened in Western Europe after the Truman Doctrine was announced?  What happened in the Middle East after the Eisenhower Doctrine was announced?  What happened with Cuba or Vietnam after Kennedy offered up his doctrine of flexible response?  What happened in Southeast Asia or the Persian Gulf after the Nixon Doctrine went in effect?  What happened in the Middle East after the Carter Doctrine was announced?  What happened in Central America or Africa or the Middle East after Reagan announced his doctrine?

Step 4: Refer back to the country you selected in step two and describe the relationship that currently exists between the U.S. and that country.
How has the relationship changed between the U.S. and that country since the doctrine was announced?

Step 5: Evaluate whether or not the presidential doctrine had had the intended effect of altering the behavior of the one country you selected in section (2) above since the doctrine was first announced.

Your assignment must:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Identify the cultural, economic, and political context of information resources, and interpret information in light of that context.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in international problems.
  • Write clearly and concisely about international problems using proper writing mechanics

According to Norton, Sheriff, Et al, (2011), presidential
doctrines are basically the attitudes, stances or attitudes for The United
States of America foreign affairs plan by presidents. However, most of these
presidential doctrines were related to cold war. After the cold war a leading
basis during President Kennedy years, there was a need to cover communism at
any cost. Kennedy called upon for military unison and strength to curb
communism. Another main theme in this doctrine was basically to control
international system events simply because the United States of America had the
power and ability to do so.

In addition, the Kennedy Doctrine was fundamentally an
extension of the foreign policy privileges of the earlier presidencies of Harry
S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower. All these presidents’ foreign policies
rotated around communism threats including the means that would be used to
cover up the spread of it by the United States.

   According to
McCormick, (1995), The Eisenhower Doctrine concentrated upon providing both
economic and military support to nations fighting communism within the Middle
East and by aggregating the trade flow into Latin America from the United
States while the Truman Doctrine concentrated on the repression of communism by
offering support to nations repelling communism in Europe.  On the other hand, The Kennedy Doctrine was
grounded on similar goals but was extra apprehensive with communism spreading
and Soviet inspiration in Latin America after the Cuban upheaval that got Fidel
Castro to authority in the 1950s under Eisenhower.

After Fidel Castro took power in Cuba, the relationship
between Cuba and the United States of America the relationship between the two
nations started deteriorating reaching to a climax when President Dwight D.
Eisenhower closed severs diplomatic relations and the American embassy that was
situated in Havana, Cuba (Domínguez, 1997). However, this was a great signal to
Cuba that America was now ready to take extreme actions against Castro’s
regime, which was seen by the officials from the United States to be a lodgment
of communism within the western hemisphere.

After a series of increasing conflicts between United
States and Cuban governments they later parted, and that is the time that Fidel
Castro turned for assistance from the United States ultimate enemy and rival,
the Soviet Union. However, the alliance between Cuba and Soviet Union was the
main reason that America saw Castro threat to their security and that was
evident during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Additionally, Che Guevara, Castro
and other influential leaders encouraged and supported revolt all through
Africa and Latin America (Domínguez, 1997).

Castro’s regime by 1960, had grabbed private land,
state-owned hundreds of private companies, comprising numerous local affiliates
of U.S. organizations and overtaxed United States of American products that
United States exports were split in just two years. This greatly affected the
United States economy and that’s why President Eisenhower Government reacted by
executing trade limitations on everything excluding medical supplies and food.

According to Litwak, (2000), on Feb. 7, 1962 President
Kennedy issued the perpetual restriction, this was after he shipped in 1,200
cigars from Cuba. Within several years Cuba’s economy was deteriorating since
America was not trading with them and due to the fact that they always depended
on products made in America. Decrease in food consumption, televisions and
Telephones were not available, importing cars from America was very hard hence
affected their economy as they observed their pre-restricted vehicles erode
into rattletraps. The relationship between the United States of America and
Cuban governments can be summarized by just a few words “Great enemies” simply
because Cuban government had become too anti-American to be trusted.

For more than five decades or bad relationship, President
Barack Obama of the United States and Cuban President Raul Castro officially
announce that the both governments would reinstate complete diplomatic, on
December, 2014. This was made successful by the secret talks between the Cuban
and United States officials that took at least eighteen months; this was
followed by release of foreign prisoners from both countries by both countries.
On July, 2015, both nations in each other’s capitals they revived their
embassies successfully reinstating full diplomatic relations.

On this month, Jan 2016, trade and new travel regulations
were legislated that permit United States travelers to officially visit Cuba
deprived of attaining a government license first. Travellers will be permitted
to spend money on both countries and also airlines will be allowed to offer the
country services. The new rules will favor economic transactions by removing
economic sanctions.

Although, Cuba had remained strong and hence resisted the
United States within a very tough and long period of time, President Kennedy’s
doctrine dealt with this case strongly. His statesmanship skills led to a
remarkable success of America over Cuba rebellion. The economy in the United States
improved as the Cuban economy deteriorated due to retaliatory restriction that
was executed on Cuban people who were already suffering.

According to Wright, (2001), after the humanitarian and
cultural relationship between the people of United States and Cuban people was
outlawed, the people of Cuban continued to suffer as United States curtailed
the trade between the two nations, lack of enough food, poor medical services
deteriorated their health. On the other hand, the successful Cuban missile
crisis in 1977, weaken the Cuban government making the United States remain
strong and tough to the poor Cuba.

However, it is clear that the two nations would benefit
from trading together, the trade restrictions did not have a great impact to
the entrenched government of Cuba, and it harmed the innocent citizens of Cuba
while the embedded bureaucrats uphold normal living standards as the citizens
of Cuba continue to suffer.

Cuba had become one of great United States territorial
importance, American government had to work faster so as to invade and capture
their territories, and hence this remains the main reason as to why Kennedy’s
doctrine was executed. Communism that was faster spreading within the Latin
America was basically a threat to the United States simply because it would
automatically tear apart a crucial influence sphere in the Caribbean (Freedman,
2000).

Kennedy’s government feared that Cuba would grow strong
from the support they got from Soviet Union and thus communism regime would
gradually expand and grow strong even within the neighboring nations. So the
main aim of this doctrine was for the United States to basically expand its
territories to Cuba.

1. Please read the chapter-opening case “Fire On the Ground” on page 547 and answer the following questions: What are the advantages and disadvantages of venture capital financing? What are the benefits of an IPO as a source of financing? Would you consider investing in Fago de Chao? Why or why not?

Primary Response To Instructor

There are several advantages and disadvantages when it comes to venture capital financing.

Advantages

  • Faster Growth – Venture Capital can provide support when it comes to taxes, legal help, and even personal matters. This can help with growth for a company. Many issues however tend to come from money related problems.
  • Connections – People who go in to venture capital tend to have connections or have experience themselves. Having these connections are always great for new businesses.
  • Capital Return – Of course for most investors or VC, one of the main advantages is the act of investing and gaining money in return.

Disadvantages

  • Risk – There is still some risk to this as a business still might fail or lose value in it’s stocks. It is possible that whatever money is invested might not come back to the investor. This can happen when a business fails. Even when stocks grow, it can still fall heavily. In a way it is a different type of gambling
  • Ownership – Since investors are the one putting in money, they tend to gain or become the new owner or have part ownership. They can demand and try to dictate things such as how to run the company or be board of director. Losing control can be problematic.
  • Expensive – The amount of money invested can be costly, what’s more is that any services, legal advice, fees, etc. will add up to a bigger amount that needs to be paid.

Going public or IPO means its stocks are open to the public. This is beneficial because it can lead to a large number of investors who think the business will do good. This can lead to several factors that help a business such as more capital and most of all publicity. This also means that the company has to listen and answer to the shareholders as they can sometimes have a say. This is why there are some instances were companies will own 51% of their stock and only sell 49% so that they can keep majority rule.

If we are talking about my current state, I most likely will not invest in Fogo de Chao. Currently they are around $15.75 per share. From my experience with stocks, that’s decent when it comes to pricing. For comparison there are companies like Google who are at $1,100 and smaller companies that can go all the way to $0.50, generally these would be called penny stocks. However, the pricing is sometimes not the issue. Fogo de Chao’s stock has jumped up 20% within a month, this is a great sign for investors and even a greater sign for the current shareholders. But for some people this could be a sign that one of two things will happen. First, it will keep growing, so this is a sign to buy shares now. Second, the shares jumped up so high that it will either stagnate or decrease. If the latter I would most likely wait for it to drop to its lowest point and then buy. The idea is to buy low and sell high. Again when it comes to the stock market, it can become a gamble. There are numerous other factors that take into account the pricing of a single share or stock. For cases like Fogo de Chao, I would have to research and follow them more to make a real decision, in this instance, I would not Invest.

Primary post- Response to Instructor’s prompt

The advantages of venture capital financing are might allow you to quickly create and expand the business, gaining market share and brand recognition before competitors can beat you to the market. Because venture capital is not a loan, it is looked at as equity in the company instead of debt carried by the company which means the company doesn’t have to repay the money. As the company grows, the founders share of the company increases in value. Of course the other advantage is having access to money, especially when you don’t have enough of your own to fund your startup.

The disadvantages of venture capital financing are risk, uncertainty and loss of total control over decisions made about the company’s direction. This can be difficult for entrepreneurs who have a particular vision of the growth of the company.Venture capital investors may also push for a quicker exit from the market than the original owner is willing to consider, either through acquisition by a larger company or through an initial public offering.

The benefits of an IPO as a source of financing include: raising capital quickly from investors, not having to rely on a bank for further financing and rewarding your efforts as a founder of your startup.

I would not consider investing in Fago de Chao primarily because I am vegetarian and do not eat meat. I want to invest in a company that I believe in and because I am investing my own money into the company. Because of my personal values,I do not feel comfortable investing in Fago de Chao even it is profitable because of my personal eating values.

On the attached document,

For the first section, add the history and start of DQ the mission and vision statement. The statement can be included, explained, and personal ideas are to be shared. For example, do you like the statement? Was there anything surprising about it? The second topic is the SMART goals ***. For the industry and SWOTT analysis, you can do this in paragraph format (will help you achieve the minimum word count). The last topic is the perceptual map. You can either put the map together through your computer (Attached) ***The perceptual map should have an explanation included as to why you included the material within the map. There should be roughly 10 sources at the end of the paper. I would recommend having titles for each of the topics that you are covering in the paper (will help it look more professional).

Also look into the mergers they have been apart of like with Orange Julius and the Grill and Chill chain they started.

Next look into the SMART goals and how they relate to Dairy Queen and what the company wants to do and where they want to go.

***Creating S.M.A.R.T. Goals

Specific

Measurable

Attainable

Realistic

Timely

Specific: A specific goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished than a general goal. To set a specific goal you must answer the six “W” questions:

*Who: Who is involved?

*What: What do I want to accomplish?

*Where: Identify a location.

*When: Establish a time frame.

*Which: Identify requirements and constraints.

*Why: Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal.

EXAMPLE: A general goal would be, “Get in shape.” But a specific goal would say, “Join a health club and workout 3 days a week.”

Pretend you are an OSHA inspector. Develop a modified inspection checklist for use in identifying what needs to be corrected in the physical plant either where you work or the Ivy Tech region where you are enrolled. Use Google to find an example of a good checklist and use as a template for your project. The purpose of the evaluation report is purely educational! This project is worth 75 points.

Prepare worksheet using Excel or Word and upload saved document here. Be sure that lines are usable (check yes/no, and comments). Make checklist professional with Title of Checklist. Be sure to indicate in the text box the URL of the OSHA checklist you are modifying.

2) PEER REVIEW #1 (IMANI)

As a manager, I only enforce policies already place. If i rise to a position to make policies I will do like Amazon and keep it professional. Work is work, and depending on the organization’s culture I can do a lot or a little. I find everyone likes money and it is the best way to incentivize most employees. I do not want to retain employees that do not want to stay, however, so bonuses will have to be based on things like showing up on time and attendance as well as performance.

I got the color blue on the test and I think the description fits.

3) PEER REVIEW #2 (KELLIE)

Hello professor and classmates,

As a manager some policies I would instill to keep workers engage with there jobs would be to hold preshift meetings to allow them to speak on problems and concerns, also I would treat employees with preshift snacks like donuts pizza bottles water or juice, also recognizing employees birthdays are important too. Showing appreciation to employees to help encourage them to have a good shift.Thanksgiving diner at work and Christmas parties are things as a manager I would do to help the employees engage more at work and a chance to get to know others that may be of a diverse, this can also leadin to good work habits. By showing that all employees personalities are accounted is incorporated in the company by suggests ideas and recommendations through the employees themselves, having an idea box is a good idea I have seen a work places before. Having a diverse of managers and supervisors also can help with ideas also.

My color test results was GREEN

The test suggested that I was Helper/supporter. Saying that I like to improvise and don’t like getting tangled up in details. I am creative and imaginative, I’m good at reading other people’s emotions and I’m supportive and loyal.I challenge others when should and my people skills will make me a good and valuable colleague.
