• Analyze and synthesize information on assigned topic

Required learning activities:

1.Execute a computer search for a minimum of five (5) evidenced-based peer-reviewed journal articles related to assigned topic.

2.Analyze each evidenced-based article

3.Review guidelines for creating an annotated bibliography (found in ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING RUBRICS).

4.Create a summary (annotated bibliography for each of the five (5) evidenced-based peer-reviewed articles

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

What is an annotated bibliography? An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (no more than 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph (the annotation). The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. The process: Creating an annotated bibliography calls for the application of a variety of intellectual skills, concise exposition, succinct analysis, and informed library research.

Steps:

1.Locate and record citations to books, periodicals, and documents that may contain useful information and ideas on your topic. Briefly examine and review the actual items. Then choose those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic.

2.Cite the book, article, or document using the appropriate style (APA).

3.Write a concise annotation that summarizes the central theme and scope of the book or article.

4.Include one or more sentences that:

(a)evaluate the authority or background of the article;

(b)comment on the intended audience;

(c)compare or contrast this work with another that you have cited; or,

(d)explain how this work illuminates your bibliography topic.

For this exercise, you do not need to include a cover sheet or double-space.

of traditional family orientations among young adults. American Sociological Review,

51(4), 554-558.

The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and Brown University, use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that nonfamily living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, moving them away from their held belief in traditional sex roles. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. Increasing the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families. In contrast, an earlier study by Williams (cited below) shows no significant gender differences in sex attitudes, because of nonfamily living. The student found the article insightful on nonfamily living among young couples. Advance practice nurses are often key health care providers for young couples living away from their parents.

Prenatal care is an important aspect of a healthy pregnancy that Mexican-American women may not embrace. In this qualitative study, 50 Mexican-American women in early pregnancy were asked a series of questions to discover common themes regarding the importance they placed on prenatal care. Study results were as follows: All participants agreed that prenatal care was important to them; one half of the participants stated they could not afford going to the doctor as recommended but would try to go as often as possible; one third stated another female family member could care for them. This study directly relates to advanced practice nursing because impoverished Mexican-American women may be a vulnerable population at-risk during pregnancy and advanced practice nurses are often the key providers of care. The student believes this article provides important insights regarding perceptions of antepartum care among some Mexican-American women.

Please see grading criteria for content and most recent APA manual for Citation.

Correct APA format for citations and references is required for all graduate courses. Review your APA style manual carefully for each citation and reference. Remember, you have other APA resources you can use, such as OWL @ Purdue, Harvard APA, or APA programs you may purchase such as PERRLA (please note that not all citations from this program are correct).
